Buying a pyrolysis plant fails or succeeds on two decisions: which machine you buy and who buys the oil. The machine decides your specification, the specification decides your market, and the market decides whether the project repays. Pyrolysis machines from China dominate the market on price, from small batch plants at tens of thousands of dollars to continuous lines approaching half a million, and the equipment can be excellent, but the oil a reactor makes is only worth what its analysis says. The commercial mistake we see weekly is buying the machine first and looking for the oil buyer last. Arrange the offtake while the machine is still on the drawing board, because a plant with a signed buyer for its output is a business, and a plant without one is a very expensive heater.

Which of the last two boxes you land in decides the rules that apply: mass balance and recycled content, or the recycled carbon fuel regime.
What a pyrolysis machine really costs
The price ladder. Small batch plants start around tens of thousands of dollars, mid-size batch configurations run to the low hundreds of thousands, and continuous lines reach toward half a million before installation. Published supplier ranges from the main Chinese manufacturers span roughly eleven thousand to five hundred thousand dollars depending on capacity and configuration, and the installed cost always exceeds the quoted price.
Batch or continuous. Batch plants are cheaper, simpler and easier to maintain, and suit modest feedstock flows. Continuous plants cost more but run constantly, and constant running is what produces the consistent oil analysis that buyers pay premiums for. The choice is commercial, not just technical.
The hidden costs. Feedstock preparation, storage tanks, safety systems, permits, laboratory access and working capital for the first months of operation. A machine quote is the entrance ticket, not the budget.
Scale honestly. A small plant turns small money if the oil sells well and no money if it does not. Size the plant to the feedstock you can actually secure, not to the capacity that looks impressive in a brochure.
Chinese pyrolysis equipment: how to judge it
China builds the market's price benchmark. The majority of machines sold worldwide come from Chinese manufacturers, and the best of them are serious industrial equipment, exported globally with installation support. The difference between a good supplier and a poor one is not the passport, it is the specification discipline.
What to check on the reactor. Steel thickness and grade, the heating system's design and energy source, the condenser arrangement that decides your oil fractions, and the safety systems, pressure relief, gas handling, sealing. Ask for reference plants running your feedstock and speak to their owners.
Ask for the oil analysis, not the brochure. A serious supplier shows certificate analyses from running plants, water content, fraction split, halogens, because that document is your future revenue statement. A supplier who cannot produce oil analyses from reference installations is selling steel, not a business.
Service and spare parts. Seals, valves and wear parts decide uptime, and uptime decides output. Agree spare part packages, response commitments and commissioning support in the contract, in writing, before the deposit.
Compliance documents. Pressure vessel certification, electrical standards and the documentation your own country's inspectors will demand. Importing a machine is customs work, importing a machine that cannot be commissioned legally is a very heavy garden ornament.
From machine to money: arrange the oil buyer first
The oil is the business. Machines are bought once, oil is sold every month, and the oil's analysis decides the price of every cargo. Buyers screen on chlorine, water, sulphur and the fraction picture, the same five numbers whether the reactor was built in Jiangsu or Rotterdam.
Write the offtake into the project plan. A letter of intent or a qualified buyer conversation turns a machine purchase into a financeable project, and banks read buyer interest as collateral. Plants with offtake on signing day are the ones that survive their first year.
What we do for plant builders. We assess the projected specification against the real market, introduce the right buyers while the machine is being built, and run the qualification on samples as soon as the plant produces. Our fee is commission on business that concludes, so our interest in your project is simple, we want your oil to be sellable.
The specification conversation is free. Send the machine offer, the feedstock description and the capacity before you sign anything. If the project's oil will not clear the market's doors, you want to know that before the deposit, and we will say it straight.
Importing pyrolysis oil into Europe
Waste or product decides everything. Pyrolysis oil imported as waste follows the shipment regulation's procedures, while oil that meets end-of-waste criteria enters as a product under ordinary customs rules. The classification is the first file, the customs code follows it (see our CN codes page).
End-of-waste is moving. France introduced end-of-waste criteria for plastic pyrolysis oil in February 2024, a national framework, and European harmonisation is on the agenda, with the chemical industry pressing for a single market in recycled carbon streams. The direction of travel is clear, national first, European eventually.
REACH and the product side. Oil entering as a product at more than one tonne per year faces REACH registration questions, with exemptions and thresholds that depend on the substance position, see our REACH page. Get the classification right before the first shipment, not after the first border.
Certification travels with the cargo. ISCC PLUS or equivalent turns imported oil into recycled content claims for European buyers, the certificate chain starting at the plant, wherever the plant stands. We place Chinese, American and European plant output by the same rule, the analysis and the certificate decide, not the flag.
Duties and logistics. The tariff classification sets the duty, terminals handle pyrolysis oil as a chemical cargo, and the import file is the same one we build for every cross-border parcel. Importing oil is routine when the paperwork leads the tanker.

What does a pyrolysis machine cost?
Published prices from the main Chinese manufacturers span roughly eleven thousand dollars for small batch plants to around half a million for large continuous lines, with most serious tyre and plastic installations landing between fifty and three hundred fifty thousand before installation and permits. The machine quote is the anchor, not the budget.
Are Chinese pyrolysis plants good?
The best Chinese manufacturers build equipment that runs worldwide, and China sets the market's price benchmark. Judge the supplier the way you judge any industrial vendor, reference plants, oil analyses from running installations, materials and certification, service commitments in the contract. Geography does not decide quality, specification discipline does.
Batch or continuous pyrolysis, which should I buy?
Batch suits smaller feedstock flows with lower capital, continuous suits plants chasing consistency and volume. Because buyers pay for repeatable analysis, continuous running usually wins on oil value, when the feedstock supply justifies it. Match the machine to the feedstock you can secure, not the reverse.
How much oil does a 10 tonne per day plant make?
Roughly 4 to 4.5 tonnes of oil from 10 tonnes of tyres, and 6 to 8 from clean polyolefin plastics, the rest leaving as char, gas and water. Those yields are the plant's revenue physics, and every business plan should be checked against them honestly.
Is a pyrolysis plant profitable?
When three things align, secured feedstock at the right price, a machine that holds its specification, and a buyer for the oil at a price that covers capital and operations. The profitability question is an offtake question wearing overalls, which is why we say arrange the oil buyer before the deposit.
What permits do I need for a pyrolysis plant?
Environmental permits for emissions and waste handling, industrial operating licences, pressure vessel and safety certifications, and waste management authorisations where feedstock arrives as waste. Permitting is country and site specific, and it outlasts the equipment negotiation, start it first.
Can I import pyrolysis oil from China into Europe?
Yes, when the oil enters under the right classification, waste procedures or product customs rules, with the analysis, REACH position and certificate chain in order. We place plant output from Asia into European buyers routinely, the file leads the tanker.
Do I need ISCC PLUS certification on a new plant?
If the oil will carry recycled content claims into chemicals and fuels, yes, and planning the certification during construction costs weeks, retrofitting it after commissioning costs months. The certificate is part of the plant's revenue design.
Can I sell my oil before the plant is built?
You can and should, qualification runs on projected specification and samples from the supplier's reference plants, and the offtake you sign early is the financing you raise cheaper. Buyers walk with projects all the time, ours among them, bring the file early.
What size pyrolysis plant should I buy?
The size your feedstock security and your oil buyer support, in that order. Undersized plants disappoint investors, oversized plants buy feedstock at panic prices, and the right size is a supply contract question before it is an equipment catalogue question.
What about warranty and service on Chinese machines?
Negotiate spare part packages, wear part schedules, commissioning support on site and response times into the contract, and check the reference plants' uptime stories yourself. Warranty is a contract clause, service is a relationship, buy both.
What feedstock should a new plant run on?
The feedstock you can secure for years, clean polyolefin plastics for oil yield, tyres for capacity and the recovered carbon black side stream, each with different buyers for the output. The machine follows the feedstock, the oil buyer follows the machine, plan in that order.
Do you help choose a pyrolysis machine supplier?
We do not sell or represent machine makers, and we say so plainly, but we will tell you whether the oil the machine is specified to make will sell, at what specification and what price level. That is the half of the decision the supplier cannot answer, and it is the half that repays the loan.
