How to sell

Exporting used cooking oil from Asia to Europe

We place Asian used cooking oil with European biorefineries. This page is the shared route with the differences that actually matter per origin.

The European side of an Asian UCO export is identical for every origin -- ISCC EU chain from the collecting point, a consistent analysis, CN 3823 80 99 or 1518 00 99, secured payment -- and what differs per country is the export side: licensing in China, the palm-mill ecosystem alongside UCO in Malaysia and Indonesia, and collection industries still scaling in Vietnam and Thailand. Asian streams carry one extra burden in Europe: they get screened harder than European material, which is exactly why sellers whose file is complete clear residue-grade value while the rest clear at a discount. For the India-specific route there is a separate page; this one covers the rest of Asia.

Where it comes from and where it goes
  1. 1Collection or rendering
  2. 2Pretreatment
  3. 3Certified trade
  4. 4Producer: HVO, SAF or FAME
  5. 5Fuel in the tank

The value is created at step three: without the certification the same molecule is worth what tallow was worth twenty years ago.

The shared European file, in one table

Whatever the origin, the European buyer asks for the same six things in the same order.

The destination file. Buyers screen these before they talk price -- regardless of origin.
ElementWhat good looks like
Certificate chainISCC EU at every link from the Asian collecting point to the European importer, with point-of-origin self-declarations behind it.
AnalysisFFA, moisture and impurities on a current COA; retained samples; no surprises at discharge testing.
ClassificationCN 3823 80 99 or 1518 00 99 as the cargo warrants; the waste-or-product question settled before nomination.
Volume patternA monthly stream from a stable collection base, not spot dribs from moving origins.
FreightFlexitank or ISO tank programme on the lane, with the landed cost -- not the freight rate -- as the number that matters.
PaymentLC or cash-against-documents on first business, opening with the relationship.

What actually differs per country

Origin-side differences. Export rules move -- always confirm with your customs agent before you commit a cargo.
OriginWhat shapes the export
ChinaLarge collection base and export experience, with licensing and rebate formalities that have changed more than once; the practical requirement is an export route your agent can document today.
Malaysia and IndonesiaThe UCO trade runs alongside the palm ecosystem -- POME and SBEO streams share lanes and paperwork. Keeping streams separate and documented is what European due diligence rewards.
Vietnam and ThailandCollection industries still scaling: volumes are real but aggregation matters more, and the ISCC chain often starts at a newly certified collecting point.
IndiaIts own page: the FSSAI/RUCO ecosystem and the largest English-language origin demand -- see export UCO from India.

Why Asian offers get screened harder -- and how to benefit

The European industry has seen misdeclared vegetable oil sold as UCO, and it responded with more scrutiny on Asian streams -- volume checks against collection bases, verified point-of-origin declarations, re-testing at discharge. For sellers with a clean file that scrutiny is a moat: every fraudulent stream that exits the market makes yours scarcer and your paperwork more valuable.

The broker's role on this lane is presentation: European buyers screen Asian offers in a fixed format, and a stream presented in that format -- analysis, chain, continuity -- removes the discount that distance and doubt otherwise charge. See why use a broker.

Frequently asked questions

Which Asian origin do European buyers prefer?

They prefer the stream, not the flag: a documented collection base, a consistent analysis and an unbroken ISCC chain beat any country of origin. What varies per origin is the export formalities -- the table above.

Do you need an export licence to sell UCO to Europe?

It depends on the origin and it changes: China has formalities around licensing that have moved before, others are lighter. Confirm the current route with your customs agent before committing a cargo -- the European file is the same either way.

Can UCO travel together with POME streams?

They share lanes but should not share paperwork: separate streams, separate documentation, separate declarations. Mixing muddies both files -- see our POME pages.

Who to ask about Export UCO from Asia

Just ask. Sitting on Asian UCO volume? Send the origin, the analysis and the monthly tonnage and we will tell you where it lands in Europe. You get Bart van den Brug on the other end, same working day, in English or Dutch, and across the team also in French, Portuguese, Polish, Czech and Russian.

On how we work: on the feedstocks and fuels on this site we are a broker. We never take title, we do not trade our own book, and we are paid a commission on business that concludes. Additives are the one exception: those we also buy and sell for our own account, and we say in which capacity we are acting before you commit to anything. Either way you will hear it from us when the answer is no, or when your parcel is not ready for the conversation you want to have. A market read or a second opinion on a specification costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

Happy to look at whatever you have, even if it is half an analysis and a question.
