SPECIMEN safety data sheet: Crude glycerine

1.Identification of the substance/mixture and of the company/undertaking
Product: Co-product of transesterification in biodiesel production, containing glycerol together with water, salts, MONG and residual methanol.
Identified use: Feedstock for glycerine refining, oleochemicals, biogas and combustion.

2.Hazards identification
Classification depends principally on the residual methanol content. Material with appreciable methanol may be classified as flammable and toxic; well-stripped material generally is not. This is the single most important line on this specimen.
Hazard classification is driven by residual methanol. Above the relevant concentration limits, methanol classification applies: flammable liquid, acute toxicity and specific target organ toxicity.
Alkaline material can be irritant or corrosive depending on pH.
3.Composition/information on ingredients
Glycerol, typically 80 % or higher in the traded crude grade, with water, inorganic salts, matter organic non-glycerol (MONG) and residual methanol.
Methanol content and pH must be stated by the supplier for each batch.

Where methanol is present, treat as a flammable liquid: bonded and earthed transfer, no ignition sources, adequate ventilation.
Store in closed containers. Alkaline grades attack aluminium and zinc.

Appearance: viscous liquid, pale yellow to dark brown. Miscible with water.
