SPECIMEN safety data sheet: Pyrolysis oil (plastic-derived)

1.Identification of the substance/mixture and of the company/undertaking

Product: Liquid hydrocarbon produced by thermal cracking of waste plastic, traded as a petrochemical cracker feedstock or for further upgrading.

Identified use: Feedstock for steam cracking and refining. Not a finished fuel.

2.Hazards identification

Commonly classified as flammable, an aspiration hazard, and as a carcinogen category 1B where benzene or comparable aromatics are present. This is the most hazardous product on this page and should be treated accordingly.

Flammable liquid and vapour. Flash point is frequently below ambient.

May cause cancer where benzene and comparable aromatics are present. Carcinogenicity classification is common for this material type.

Aspiration hazard: may be fatal if swallowed and enters airways.

Vapours may contain hydrogen sulphide and light hydrocarbons; treat headspace as potentially toxic and oxygen deficient.

3.Composition/information on ingredients

Complex hydrocarbon mixture: paraffins, olefins, naphthenes and aromatics. Composition varies substantially with feedstock and reactor conditions.

Chlorine, silicon, nitrogen and metals content are the parameters a cracker screens on, and they vary far more than with a conventional feedstock.

Handle as a flammable hydrocarbon: inert atmosphere, bonded and earthed transfer, explosion-protected equipment, no ignition sources.

Vapour space monitoring before entry. Full respiratory protection for tank work.

8.Exposure controls/personal protection

Benzene exposure limits apply where benzene is present. Personal monitoring should be considered.

Chemically resistant gloves, eye protection and, for enclosed work, supplied air respiratory protection.

9.Physical and chemical properties

Appearance: liquid, straw to dark brown or black. Characteristic hydrocarbon odour.

Density and boiling range vary widely by process. Batch values must come from the analysis.

Normally dangerous goods. UN number and packing group depend on the flash point and composition of the actual material. Do not ship without classifying the specific batch.

Where placed on the EU market, REACH registration or a valid exemption is required. Fuels from non-renewable waste fall under the recycled carbon fuel rules rather than under Annex IX.

What to do with this
