SPECIMEN safety data sheet: HVO / renewable diesel (paraffinic)

THIS IS A SPECIMEN. IT IS NOT A SAFETY DATA SHEET.

It is published as a worked example, to show which information belongs in which of the sixteen sections required by Regulation (EU) 2020/878. It contains no batch data, no supplier data and no customer data, and it must never be supplied, presented or relied upon as a real safety data sheet.

Sustainable Commodities 3 B.V. is a broker. It does not manufacture, import or supply this product, and it is not a supplier within the meaning of Article 3(32) of REACH. Sections 1 and 14 cause the most arguments in practice: section 1 has to name the party that places the material on the market, and section 14 governs whether the cargo may travel as booked. We are a broker, not the supplier, so the sheet for your material has to come from the party you are buying from.

1.Identification of the substance/mixture and of the company/undertaking

Product: Hydrotreated vegetable oil, a paraffinic diesel fuel specified under EN 15940.

Identified use: Drop-in diesel fuel, neat or blended.

2.Hazards identification

Typically classified as an aspiration hazard, and as harmful to aquatic life. Treated as a combustible hydrocarbon liquid.

Aspiration hazard: may be fatal if swallowed and enters airways. This is the governing hazard for hydrocarbon fuels of this type.

Combustible liquid. May cause skin irritation on repeated contact.

3.Composition/information on ingredients

Predominantly C15 to C18 iso- and n-paraffins. Essentially free of aromatics and of sulphur.

Handle as a hydrocarbon fuel: bonded and earthed transfer, no ignition sources.

Cleaner burning and more stable in storage than FAME, but the same housekeeping precautions apply to soaked absorbents.

9.Physical and chemical properties

Appearance: clear, water white. Density typically 770 to 790 kg/m3 at 15 C.

Cetane number above 70 for class A. Sulphur 5 mg/kg maximum.

Note the density: a tonne of HVO is more litres than a tonne of EN 590 diesel, and a litre carries less energy.
