SPECIMEN safety data sheet: Fatty acid methyl ester (FAME / biodiesel)

THIS IS A SPECIMEN. IT IS NOT A SAFETY DATA SHEET.

It is published as a worked example, to show which information belongs in which of the sixteen sections required by Regulation (EU) 2020/878. It contains no batch data, no supplier data and no customer data, and it must never be supplied, presented or relied upon as a real safety data sheet.

Sustainable Commodities 3 B.V. is a broker. It does not manufacture, import or supply this product, and it is not a supplier within the meaning of Article 3(32) of REACH. Only the actual supplier may issue a safety data sheet, and only that document describes the material you are buying. Ask your supplier for it.

1.Identification of the substance/mixture and of the company/undertaking

Product: Methyl esters of fatty acids produced by transesterification, meeting EN 14214 where sold as automotive fuel.

Identified use: Automotive diesel fuel and heating fuel, neat or as a blend component.

Document issued by: Sustainable Commodities 3 B.V., Lemsterpad 54-A1, 8531 AA Lemmer, the Netherlands, https://www.sustainablecommodities.eu

Role: broker and intermediary. Sustainable Commodities does not manufacture, import or supply this product and is not a supplier within the meaning of Article 3(32) of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH). The actual supplier is required to provide the safety data sheet for the material you buy.

Emergency telephone: to be stated by the actual supplier.

2.Hazards identification

Not normally classified as flammable at ambient temperature because the flash point is above 100 C, but combustible. Some grades carry aquatic or skin irritation classifications.

Combustible liquid with a flash point above 100 C under EN 14214.

Oil-soaked rags and absorbents present a genuine spontaneous combustion hazard. This is the hazard most often underestimated with FAME.

May cause skin irritation on prolonged contact.

3.Composition/information on ingredients

Fatty acid methyl esters, with residual methanol, glycerides and additives within the limits set by EN 14214.

4.First aid measures

Not completed in this specimen. In a real safety data sheet this section must be completed by the supplier for the specific material.

5.Firefighting measures

Not completed in this specimen. In a real safety data sheet this section must be completed by the supplier for the specific material.

6.Accidental release measures

Not completed in this specimen. In a real safety data sheet this section must be completed by the supplier for the specific material.

7.Handling and storage

Store away from heat and oxidising agents, under nitrogen blanket where long storage is intended. Oxidation stability declines in storage.

Incompatible with some elastomers and with copper and copper alloys, which catalyse oxidation.

8.Exposure controls/personal protection

Not completed in this specimen. In a real safety data sheet this section must be completed by the supplier for the specific material.

9.Physical and chemical properties

Appearance: clear liquid, pale to amber. Density 860 to 900 kg/m3 at 15 C.

Kinematic viscosity 3.5 to 5.0 mm2/s at 40 C. Flash point 101 C minimum.

Cold filter plugging point varies by feedstock and by national seasonal grade.

10.Stability and reactivity

Not completed in this specimen. In a real safety data sheet this section must be completed by the supplier for the specific material.

11.Toxicological information

Not completed in this specimen. In a real safety data sheet this section must be completed by the supplier for the specific material.

12.Ecological information

Not completed in this specimen. In a real safety data sheet this section must be completed by the supplier for the specific material.

13.Disposal considerations

Do not discharge to drains or watercourses. Dispose of via an authorised contractor.

14.Transport information

Generally not dangerous goods by road in the traded condition; confirm for the actual consignment and mode.

15.Regulatory information

Sustainability and greenhouse gas criteria under Directive (EU) 2018/2001 as amended, evidenced through a recognised voluntary or national scheme.

16.Other information

Not completed in this specimen. In a real safety data sheet this section must be completed by the supplier for the specific material.

What to do with this

Use it as a checklist when you receive a safety data sheet from a supplier: if a section is blank or vague where this specimen says a value is needed, that is worth a question before the cargo moves.
